5 Motorcycle Riding Tips for Safety

  • by Anthony Kim Jr
  • April 10, 2015

Motorcycles are fun to ride. However, unlike cars, they do not have a shell that will protect you in case of any accident, and therefore they can be quite dangerous. When riding, you are not safe if you are involved in a collision or any other accident. This is the reason why it is highly important to follow as many safety tips as possible because at the end of the day, prevention is always better than cure.

Here are 5 motorcycle riding tips for safety to get you started.

1. Wear A Helmet

Wearing a helmet is the most important safety measure when you are riding a motorcycle. In motorcycle related accidents, head injuries are he leading causes of death. Riding without a helmet is a risk many riders take and this is what increases motorcycle related deaths. Every time you go out riding ensure that you wear a helmet.

2. Always Be Attentive

Looking around is more of a driver’s safety tips but is also crucial for motorcycle riders. Keep in mind that motorcycles are quite small compared to cars and some drivers might not see you. For this reason, you need to be attentive when you are riding, to alert the drivers and to ensure that you stay out of their way to prevent an accident that might lead to injuries.

3. Beware Of The Weather

Motorcycles are not as stable as cars and riding the bike in foul weather might not be the best idea. On a snowy or rainy day, you might want to consider keeping your motorcycle in the garage because in addition to being unhealthy, there are high chances of skidding and losing control. Rain brings out residues such as oil, the snow is slippery and this might be a risky time to ride. If you have to ride, wait for the rain to clear and ensure that the road is not slippery before you take motorcycle on the road.

4. Always Leave Enough Space

One of the most common mistakes that drivers and riders make is not leaving enough space for braking when moving. While bikes are much lighter and easy to maneuver, they are believed to require smaller spaces but this is not true. You never know what the driver in front of you is thinking and this simply means that you need to keep your distances to give room for any rush decisions made by other road users.

5. Get The Right Riding Gear

Apart from the helmet, which is very important, you need to have the right riding gear to improve your safety level when riding a motorcycle. You need to protect your hands, your elbows, your shoulders, bum, knees, ankles and feet this is why you need the complete riding suit to keep you safe. With all the right gear motorcycle safety will not be a hard task for you. You also need to ride within your skill level as some riding behaviors might put you and other road users at risk.
