How Many Countries in Africa Manufacture Cars from Scratch?

Despite the soaring demand for cars on the continent, the growth of Africa’s automotive industry has not been inspiring. However, some car manufacturers have made significant contribution to the growth of the industry.

Here are the African countries that manufacturer cars from scratch.

1. Nigeria- Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Co, Ltd

It’s a Nigeria-based company founded by Nigerian Industrialist Chief Innocent Chukwuma. IVM Umu and IVM Uzo are the company’s models.

2. Kenya- Mobius Motors

It’s an automaker based in Nairobi, Kenya, that builds inexpensive vehicles by integrating off-the-shelf parts within a durable and safe tubular steel frame. The company’s leading models are Mobius I and Mobius II.

3. Ghana-Kantanka Automobile Company

The company assembles its passenger vehicles at the company’s manufacturing plant in Gomoa Mpota in the central region of Ghana.

4. Uganda- Kiira Motors

Kiira Motors Corporation, the Ugandan company, displayed East Africa’s first hybrid electronics car, the Kiira in Nairobi in 2014. The vehicle was conceptualized and manufactured in Uganda. The sedan hybrid electric vehicle was designed for the region, the local terrain, and affordability. It is powered by a rechargeable battery and has an internal combustion engine-based generator that charges the battery.

5. South Africa- Advanced Automotive Design, Birkin Cars, Perana Performance Group and Bailey Edwards Cars

Founded in 1995 by Brian Glover and Rhys Edwards, Advanced Automotive Design’s popular models are the Shaka Giotto and Shaka Nynya. It is located in Die Wilgers, Pretoria.

Bailey Edwards cars is an established sports car manufacturer in South Africa. It has been producing sports cars for the race tracks and for the road. The brand has excelled against strong competitors in the sports car market.

South Africa-based car manufacturer Birkin Cars was founded in 1982. It is well known for its vehicle S3 Roadster, which is a kit-car copy of the Lotus Super 7. John Watson is the founder and owner of these cars.

This South African car developer is located in Port Elizabeth. It was founded in late 2007. The company’s cars are manufactured in their hi-tech plant of Hi-Tech Automotive and Superformance.
Perana cars include the Z-One.

6. Libya- Saroukh el-Jamahiriya

The Saroukh el-Jamiriya(Libyan Rocket) is a 5-passenger saloon in a metallic Libyan revolutionary green that comes with tinted windows. This sleek James Bond-style car was unveiled in 1999. Dukhail Al-Meghareff, chairman of the Libyan Arab Domestic Investment Company which produced the prototype, billed it as a revolutionary in automotive industry.

7. Laraki(Morocco)

This is a morocco-based company, which was established in Casablanca in 1999 to manufacture and sell luxurious high-performance sports cars. Fulgura, Borac and Epitome are some models offered by Laraki.
