How Do Women Buy Their Cars?

  • by Patrick Gioko
  • July 31, 2014

According to truecar.com, in 2011, the Mini topped the list of cars most preferred by women. The Ferrari topped the list of the cars most preferred by women. However, close to three years down the line, the trends are changing and the men are suddenly realizing that they are not the only people who love an aggressive fast car.

Women buy cars differently from men

Where men love showy, flashy cars, women love cars that are fuel efficient, cars that are not apt to break down all the time. While men will do anything to buy the car of their dreams whenever possible, it is a different case for women who look at affordability. That is why most small, urban use cars are owned by women because they are cheap.

When women go to buy a car, 76% of them ask about the safety features, as compared to 61% of the male buyers. 67% of women buyers will ask about the fuel efficiency of the car while only 48% of the men buyers remember that. Women will also consider the seating capacity of the car, perhaps the maternal instinct comes into play here. Compared to the male buyers who consider style and what is trending, ruggedness and performance, women do not “show off” in their cars as men do and therefore, small, fuel economy, family and personality define how women buy cars.

Buying a car is an emotional affair

If she does not like its looks, she will not buy the car. If she does not like its color and its size, she will not buy the car, no matter what features it packs. Buying a car for both men and women is an emotional affair because they are not just looking for a means to take them from point A to B, but they are looking for a car that makes them feel happy and proud of themselves, and a car that compliments their personality. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a big man, and that is why he drives his big black truck. When Paris Hilton drives a pink Bentley, it compliments her femininity and her personality.

In Africa, women may not drive Bentleys and other top of the range models, but their cars say a lot about their tastes. First, Nissan Note, Toyota Vitz, Pajero Jnr, new Volkswagen Beetle, Corolla, Rav4 and Mazda Demio. Talking about size, men will be fixated on size mostly, while women will consider functionality and affordability. With that information now, you know very well where your money goes.

Women form relationships with their cars

Today, women turn off the stereo when they are doing long trips to listen to the engine. They know when their car is not right, and they fall in love with their cars. When women go to buy cars, they want the salesman to listen to their needs and most important, to allow them that test drive. When women drive their cars, they form relationships with them. All women want to form a relationship with the car. If you are a salesman, know that the relationship could start right at the test drive. Give the women buyers enough time as they shop and they will surprise you.
